Winter persists. From late November through the late weeks of April we will have cold, we will have wet and we will have wind. Sure, this weather happens erratically throughout the year, but there’s something about the long winter that wears on people’s minds and mood. Maybe it’s the gray. Maybe it’s the cold. For some, maybe it’s the lack of fresh food.

Walking the Talk (weekly menu 16)

As a blogger and educator, it is very important that I “walk the talk.” The popularity of the food movement is growing and I think there will always be a pessimistic sentiment that such values and ideals are incapable of seeing fruition. Therefore, it is my goal to practice what I preach (as best I can.)

Next week starts the after school “healthy eating and meal planning” class. With my list of food projects growing, I think it’s best that I consider each with the utmost regard. This to say, that if I’m going to stand up and tell a roomful of strangers what to eat and how to afford it, I must live by such statements. That said, let me restate the goal of the weekly menu postings:

Bring Me the Meat! (weekly menu 13)

For all my talk about meat, I have to admit that I haven’t been eating it nearly as much as I did a year ago. This is both good and bad. Though the bad reason is unknown to anyone else but myself. Specifically, I’m convinced that my stomach digests meat well and I remember eating local, whole foods and feeling better than I do these days. I’m starting to think that I need to eat more meat but not too much, hopefully a sustainable amount.

Turkey Dealing in the Parking Lot

At 12 o’clock this afternoon, I found myself outside a Levi clothing store, awaiting a silver jeep to pull into the adjacent parking spot. It had taken several days to arrange this meeting. I live in north Portland and he lives outside the city’s limits to the southeast. I like fresh food from local farmers practicing sustainable farming methods. He likes letting chickens and turkeys roam around his land. It was clearly a good match for the both of us.
