When I started this blog I was excited to participate in the “great food revolution” that, whether we acknowledge it or not, is actually happening. Unlike other food blogs, I chose to write on a variety of topics. For example, most blogs write about recipes and home cooking, others focus on the politics of food. Now that I am blogging regularly I want to write on both, as well as share our meal planning strategies, foraging anecdotes and other miscellaneous food tidbits.
When I read about food online most of my time is spend on blogs devoted to politics (see the sites I read on my links page.) I even joined Twitter (you can follow me at ‘goodmaneats‘) to engage the broader conversation. Since joining Twitter and following my favorite food bloggers, I find myself feeling rather small and intimidated in the developed blogosphere of food writing. To face this great wall of information I realized I cannot write on all the political food issues.
Considering the variety of topics I like to cover in my writing, yet still craving food politics literacy, I created a “Food in the News” category on the bottom of the right column of the main blog page. As I come across news articles that I think others should read, I will have them posted on the blog. Every day I will post headlines that I think contribute to the growing conversation of food-related topics. For now I am focused on political issues – contamination, policy, accessibility, local and national trends, etc. As this process develops I foresee including links to articles on food in general, not just those with a politics emphasis.
Depending on the success of this category, I would love to create a whole new page to serve as a ‘library’ of articles. As such, if someone wanted to read up on E. coli contamination, this page would provide a list of articles on the subject. Since resourcefulness is a driving force, I hope to consider this a real possibility.
